Fire Prevention

The Fire Prevention Bureau, overseen by Fire Marshal Kathy Schaefer, adopts and enforces codes and ordinances relative to fire and life safety issues, reviews plans and conducts inspections of construction projects, coordinates annual life safety inspections of all existing commercial buildings, and enforces brush clearance/weed abatement throughout the City of Brea.

Meet the Staff

Kathy Schaefer, Division Chief - Fire Marshal/PIO

Chief Kathy Schaefer began her career with the Brea Fire Department in May of 1990. She became a paramedic in 1995 and worked as a Firefighter/Paramedic until promoted to Captain in December of 2000. In July of 2015, Chief Schaefer was promoted to Battalion Chief.  Just over a year later, she was chosen for the position of Division Chief of Administration/Fire Marshal for both Fullerton and Brea Fire Departments where she is currently overseeing the staff in both bureaus. 

Peter Salgado, Fire Protection Analyst

Peter Salgado has almost 13 years of experience in Fire Prevention.  He started working in 2005 as a Volunteer Inspector for Garden Grove Fire Department. Soon after, he worked for Los Angeles County Fire Department, Monterey Park Fire Department and the last 8 years for Brea Fire Department.  He currently holds the position of Fire Protection Analyst and is responsible for plan review, new construction and fire protection system inspections; as well as code interpretation.

Nicole Pesqueira, Fire Prevention Specialist II

Nicole Pesqueira has worked in the fire service for over 9 years working for Orange City Fire, Pasadena Fire and now in her current role at the Brea Fire Department. Nicole is responsible for annual fire life safety inspections, special event inspections, candle/open flame permits, complaint inspections, and public education. She serves on the Orange County Fire Prevention Officers board as Secretary and is Co-Chair for the Southern California Fire Prevention Officers Association.

Ron Aristondo, Fire Prevention Specialist I

Ron Aristondo began his career with Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) in March of 2010 as a Volunteer Firefighter.  He was hired shortly thereafter as a New Construction Inspector with OCFA. He also worked for Fullerton Fire Department as a Fire Inspector. Ron is responsible for annual fire life safety inspections, weed abatement, complaint inspections, and new construction inspections.
